The NEWFitzroy Readers Running Records(FRRRs) are a simple and intuitive tool designed to help educators track student reading progress.
Applicable in all educational settings, FRRRs assess student proficiency in reading aloud on three measures: Fluency,Accuracyand Punctuation.
Fluencyis the smoothness and speed with which the reader connects sounds, syllables, words and phrases.
Accuracy is a measure of a student's ability to decode and pronounce words correctly. (FRRRs do not require educators to count errors.)
Punctuationtracks how deftly the student incorporates punctuation into their reading.
Punctuationis often subsumed into Fluency in running records. However, after an extensive design and testing process, this component of literacy has been separated out in the FRRRs. Presented with text, students have just two sources of information at their disposal: words and punctuation. Following the internal voice of the writer, punctuation is as essential as the words themselvesin giving text meaning, and signalling how it is to be interpreted.
Fluency, Accuracyand Punctuationare tracked in the FRRRs using a simple 1-5 scale, where 1 is 'getting started' and 5 is 'got it'.
