Fitzroy Readers Running Records

The NEWFitzroy Readers Running Records(FRRRs) are a simple and intuitive tool designed to help educators track student reading progress.

Applicable in all educational settings, FRRRs assess student proficiency in reading aloud on three measures: Fluency,Accuracyand Punctuation.

Fluencyis the smoothness and speed with which the reader connects sounds, syllables, words and phrases.

Accuracy is a measure of a student's ability to decode and pronounce words correctly. (FRRRs do not require educators to count errors.)

Punctuationtracks how deftly the student incorporates punctuation into their reading.

Punctuationis often subsumed into Fluency in running records. However, after an extensive design and testing process, this component of literacy has been separated out in the FRRRs. Presented with text, students have just two sources of information at their disposal: words and punctuation. Following the internal voice of the writer, punctuation is as essential as the words themselvesin giving text meaning, and signalling how it is to be interpreted.

Fluency, Accuracyand Punctuationare tracked in the FRRRs using a simple 1-5 scale, where 1 is 'getting started' and 5 is 'got it'.

Available foreach level of the Fitzroy Readers, the FRRRs comprise:

  • ‘Student Read Aloud’ sheets, with carefully chosen sentences excerpted from the corresponding Reader,in a matching font size, and including all new sounds and special words presented in that Reader;
  • an ‘Individual Student’ record where educators can track the student's reading progress, using the scale described above, for each of the 90 Fitzroy Readers, including space for comments
  • a 'Whole Class' sheet, providing the teacher with a ready reference of where each student fits within the class, who might benefit from extension or support, as well as areas of explicit instruction to focus on.

The FRRRs are adaptable to the specific and evolving requirements of all education settings, and are a valuable addition to your assessment toolkit.
